Kom Buch A The Super Drink

Kombucha; the Super Drink

By Michael Sharp | March 2nd, 2018

Its fizzy, colorful, bursting with naturally sourced flavor, and resembles your favourite carbonated beverage, what am I talking about? Kombucha of course!

Kombucha, the newest trendy carbonated beverage you’ve heard so much about! But its trendiness is justified as it is not just the next health fad, it’s chalk full of health benefits and may become a part of your own health maintenance regime!

Besides it’s hard to pronounce and peculiar name, what else do you know about kombucha? If you answered saying “I only know of its hard to pronounce name, even that I don’t really know”, no need to worry, in todays blog post I’m talking about the many health promoting benefits of kombucha and what this mysterious drink really is!

Kombu-What Now?

Simply put, kombucha is just fermented tea (typically black or green tea). Now, you may be saying, “Mike, that doesn’t give me much information, what does fermented tea mean?”. Well, to start, fermentation is a process where a substance is broken down by microorganisms or bacteria. So, to make kombucha, a combination of brewed black or green tea, a mix of bacteria/yeasts, and sugar (the bacteria food) is left to sit and ferment, creating this wonderful fizzy super drink! Because natural kombucha can be a little too vinegary for some pallets, it is typically mixed with a variety of fruits, herbs, and other naturally sourced flavors to perfect its unique taste.

What Makes Kombucha So Super?

To be a super drink, kombucha must carry some amazing health benefits, right? Right! Here are some of the most important super health benefits of this super drink!

  • Bacteria, Bacteria, and More Bacteria!

You may be thinking, how is a drink full of bacteria good for me? Well, the bacteria contained in kombucha is beneficial probiotic bacteria. These types of bacteria inhabit our large intestine and are responsible for some of the most important functions of health including the digestion and assimilation of our foods, the taming of bad bacteria, the synthesis of many key nutrients for the body, and the making of brain neurotransmitters like serotonin, your happiness hormone!

  • A Low Sugar Alternative!

Now I know I said kombucha is made by adding sugar to tea, but the great thing about kombucha is that, no matter how high the sugar content is on the nutrition facts label posted on your kombucha bottle, the sugar has essentially been digested by the bacteria and yeasts, acting as their food and reducing the sugars negative effects on the body. The sugar practically makes the bacteria stronger, allowing them to benefit our systems even more!

  • Beer? Pop? How About a Kombucha!?

One of my favourite health benefits of kombucha is that, it acts as an amazing substitute for less health beneficial carbonated drink options such as beer or pop. On a nice hot summer day, many enjoy a nice cold beer or cola, but these drinks provide no health benefit to the body besides being enjoyable. Now, I’m all about realism, so have a beer or a pop occasionally, if its something that makes you happy. But to keep these less beneficial alternatives at bay and in moderation, try switching your drink out for a kombucha and see what you think!
