The Importance of Omega 3's

Fat; the most controversial topic of the health world, with such an indecisive consensus on whether it is good or bad for us. It appears that in one breath people are discussing the health hazards of fat, and in the next breath are discussing the benefits of fat and how essential it is for optimal health.

The bottom line is that there are many different types of fat, some being good for us and some being completely unnecessary for human health such as trans fats. However all fat, good or bad, is best kept in moderation and incorporated along side a balanced and healthy diet.

There is one group of fats however that stands out amongst the rest as being the most important, especially seeing as many individuals are potentially deficient in them. These lustrous fats are known as essential fatty acids or EFA’s, with the star of the family being omega 3 essential fatty acids.

Omega 3 fats are found in a variety of foods, those of which many people in north America may not incorporate into their diets any longer including fish, nuts, seeds, and eggs mostly. This is the reason why these vital fats tend to be deficient in many individuals.

Being the astounding fats that they are, omega 3’s come with a laundry list of potential health benefits. Below I will detail what is, in my opinion, the top three most important of these.

1. They Support Excessive Inflammation in the Body:

Omega 3 fats have a way of damping down inflammation in the body to ensure it does not become excessive and out of control. The way in which these fats support inflammation is through their conversion into compounds called eicosanoids which are anti-inflammatory. When inflammation in the body is excessive, it has the potential to affect many important processes and can leave us in pain.

2. They Support Healthy Heart Function and Blood Pressure Levels:

There have been many studies showing the potential ability of omega 3 fats in reducing high blood pressure. The reasons for this positive effect of omega 3 fats lye in their ability to support the relaxation of blood vessels, ensuring that blood flows better, as well as their capacity to thin the blood. With healthy blood pressure levels, the heart does not have to work excessively and in turn our heart can function optimally.

3. They Support Brain Function and Cognition

Omega 3 fats play an essential role in the functioning of the brain for several reasons. These essential fats can reduce inflammation in the brain, support the proper development of brain cells, and can assist in the formation of neurotransmitters which are responsible for sending messages in the brain.

With how important omega 3 fats have been deemed to be for optimal health, it is staggering that studies have shown that a large majority of American adults are not consuming the recommended amounts of these essential fats (4).

Ensuring we receive optimal levels of these magnificent fats can be a great way to support the health of our bodies in so many ways.
